How Your Fuel Injection System Works

Fuel injection systems play a key role in successfully running carburetor systems. They allow for cleaner emissions, a more efficient burn of fuel, increased power to gasoline engines, better mileage and increased fuel economy. Keeping your fuel injection system properly serviced by a Delaware, Ohio mechanic is just one way to keep this element of your engine running properly.

The use of electronic fuel injection on European cars began around 1980. It wasn’t until 1990 that the use of carburetors was completely replaced by the fuel injection system. A carburetor draws air in, creating pressure, which pulls gasoline from a bowl in the carburetor. This is then burned by spark plugs. While the goal of a fuel ejector remains the same as a carburetor to mix the right amount of air with the right amount of fuel in the fuel injection systems were considered the better route.

On a fuel injection system, the throttle body contains injectors and a fuel pump, which pressurizes the gasoline and forces it out as needed. There are several sensors that tell the computer how much fuel is needed and when. The computer system controls how much fuel is used by gathering information from the sensors.

When a sensor stops working, or the injectors and fuel pump are clogged and not working properly, the vehicle's check engine€ť light may flash. Dirty injectors can cause many problems including misfire, rough idling, hesitation on acceleration, loss of power and higher emissions. Adding fuel additives may slow down the build-up in the injectors, but it does not eliminate the problem.

When your car encounters this sort of issue, it is imperative you take it to a certified auto repair center in Delaware, Ohio, like Oxford Automotive, to get it checked out. This may help prevent problems in the future.
